W elcome to the website of Steven J. Levin, classical oil painter. Levin is a contemporary American artist trained in the traditional atelier methods, similar to those of 19th century Paris. He is associated with the group of artists known as Classical Realists, who trace their artistic lineage back to the Boston School painters working at the turn of the century. Levin’s work displays a thorough understanding of light and form, a deep reverence for beauty, and a profound respect for the works of the old masters. Levin cites as his main artistic influences the works of Edward Hopper, Jan Vermeer, and Rembrandt. Levin’s evocative works offer a unique vision to traditional and contemporary subjects. His paintings explore a range of subjects, concentrating predominantly on figurative works and still lifes. The moods of his paintings vary from the dark interiors of a billiard hall, where intent figures lean under pools of light, to the cool brilliance of an afternoon at the Metropolitan Museum, or to the surreal symbolism of an office building’s revolving door.

In his still life works there is a discernible resonance with the traditional subjects of the painter in his depictions of flowers and fruit, and there is also a modern current to the works that is at times whimsical and always compelling.

You are invited to explore and enjoy.

Levin makes his home in Minneapolis and exhibits his paintings in San Francisco, New York, and Cape Cod.
